Exodus 15

Exodus 15:3

"The Lord bringing wars to nothing, the Lord [is] his name."
Is God a God of war or peace?

It is sometimes asked whether the Bible presents contradictory views of God's nature, contrasting passages like Exodus 15:3 ("The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.") with Romans 15:33 ("Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.") and Philippians 4:9.

It is entirely reasonable to say that God is described as both a "warrior" and a "God of peace" based on how His unchanging nature interacts with human circumstances. While God's nature is steadfast, humanity's experience of Him varies depending on their spiritual state and historical situation. God interacts with human actions in ways that bring about His divine purpose.

The Exodus was a time when God advanced on behalf of Israel for their deliverance, making it appropriate that the hymn of praise in Exodus 15 extolled that aspect of His character. In contrast, Romans 15:33 and Philippians 4:9 are salutations in letters where blessings of peace are offered. The literary genre and historical contexts of these passages are vastly different.

A contradiction would only exist if God were described as being a God of war and a God of peace at the exact same time and while performing the exact same action. The biblical descriptions of God being warlike and being peaceful are not mutually contradictory, as they reflect His dynamic interactions with different people and situations over time to bring about salvation.
