Genesis 1

Genesis 1:4

"And God saw the light that it was good, and God divided between the light and the darkness."
Why Was Day and Night Divided Twice in Genesis 1?
Contrasting Link: Genesis 1:14

Critics point to a supposed contradiction between Genesis 1:4-5, where God divides the light from the darkness on the first day, and Genesis 1:14-16, where God creates lights in the firmament on the fourth day to divide the day from the night. They ask why God would need to divide the day from the night on the fourth day if it had already been done on the first.

This objection omits the critical context of verse 14, which explicitly states that the division on the fourth day was for the purpose of timekeeping:

> "let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years"

This is an entirely different functional purpose than the initial separation of cosmic light and darkness on the first day.
