Genesis 14:16
"And he recovered all the cavalry of Sodom, and he recovered Lot his nephew, and all his possessions, and the women and the people."
Is Lot Abraham's brother, or his nephew?
Our English language makes strict demarcations between the words "brother" and "nephew". But in Genesis 14:12 the translation "nephew" in our English Bibles is arrived at by noting that Lot is called "son-of-brother", the word for son (ben) being in the construct state. In verses 14 and 16, however, Lot is referred to as ach, which has a variety of semantic shadings to it, such as brother, relative, kinsman, and associate.
