Hebrews 9

Hebrews 9:27

"And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this [comes] judgment,"
Must all men die once, contradicting the translation of saints?

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment...

A skeptical objection claims that this clashes with passages like 1 Thess. 4:16-17, which refer to living saints being translated, and Enoch not being brought to death, because this indicates that all men "must" die. The Greek word here, apokeimai, does not carry the strength of an absolute requirement, however: It carries the sense of "reserved". Obviously, something that is "reserved" can be altered by the one who made the reservation. Note this parallel usages of the word: Luke 19:20 "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth."
