Isaiah 9:20
"But [one] shall turn aside to the right hand, for he shall be hungry; and shall eat on the left, and a man shall by no means be satisfied with eating the flesh of his own arm."
Did People Actually Eat Their Own Arms in Isaiah 9?
Isaiah 9:20 (KJV) states:
> "they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm."
Skeptics question this, asking when men ever literally ate their own arms. This objection overlooks the historical realities of ancient siege warfare. During desperate times of extended military siege and resultant famine, historical records from antiquity confirm that populations were indeed driven to unimaginable extremes, including horrific acts of cannibalism. Alternatively, many modern scholars translate the difficult Hebrew idiom here to mean eating the flesh of 'his offspring' or 'his neighbor,' which still underscores the terrifying desperation of the judgment.
