James 1

James 1:5

"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him."
Does James 1:5 promise the acquisition of divine knowledge on demand?

> If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5)

This verse is often cited by sects as a promise for receiving direct divine revelations or knowledge. However, such readings fail to distinguish between knowledge and wisdom. In the Jewish world, per the context of James' remark, wisdom refers to the ability to endure suffering and temptation, not the acquisition of knowledge or esoteric information. The passage does not present God as an automatic dispenser of information on demand, but rather as one who grants the practical wisdom needed to navigate trials.
