Luke 2

Luke 2:49

"And He said to them, "Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father's [house]?""
Was Jesus rude to his parents when they found him in the temple?
Contrasting Link: Exodus 20:12

Some readers perceive a contradiction between the commandment to 'Honor your father and mother' (Exodus 20:12) and Jesus' response to his parents when they found him in the temple: 'How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I had to be in my Father's house?' (Luke 2:49), which they view as curt or rude. However, this reading fails to approach the text with ancient values in mind. Social science commentators note that in this culture, it was actually considered proper for a son coming of age to assert independence in this manner. This was 'the first indication of a break with biological family' which was expected of young men stepping into their calling. To act otherwise in that culture would have been seen as inappropriately dependent, not disrespectful.
