Luke 4:19
"TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.""
Did Jesus or Luke misquote the scroll of Isaiah?
Luke 4:18-19 notes that Jesus read from the scroll of Isaiah, but critics point out that the exact continuous text given was not on any single scroll of Isaiah. The text is woven from Isaiah 61:1-2 and Isaiah 58:6, quoting from the Septuagint version.
However, this is not an error. It is highly unlikely that Jesus read only these specific passages, said a single sentence, and ended the sermon. Rather, Luke is exercising his right as a historian of the period to summarize the core themes of what was read and preached. Objecting to this summary requires imposing a strict literalism that ignores the accepted literary and historical practices of ancient biographers.
