Matthew 17

Matthew 17:20

"And He said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you."
Do Jesus' promises of moving mountains offer carte blanche?

> Matthew 17:20: 'He replied, Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to there and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'

One needs to consider the social context. No first-century hearer would recognize such statements as giving believers carte blanche to ask to have mountains literally turned over. This is simply a way of emphasizing God's commitment to bless the believer -- who would be expected not to ask for silly or selfish things in the first place.
