Matthew 6:34
Was Jesus Against Planning for the Future?
Skeptics sometimes point to "Do not be anxious about tomorrow" to argue that Jesus opposed planning for the future (such as establishing Social Security or savings).
In the ancient world, the average lifespan was only about 35. They believed that all goods were limited and supply had already been distributed... their holdings would literally rust out from under them. In light of the passing nature of wealth and life in that world, sages advised people to be generous with their holdings and use them before they decay. Present-time orientation was the usual value-preference, because present-survival needs could not be taken for granted.
Furthermore, Jesus was not saying that one should not plan for the future, but that one should not worry about the future -- since worrying simply takes up valuable time that could be used for planning.
