Surah 10:94
10.94 – If you are in doubt about what We have sent down to you, ask those who have been reciting the Book before you
The Quran commands the messenger to check with others if he is in doubt. Since this comes just after a story about Moses and the Children of Israel, and “those who have been reciting the Book before you” closely matches “the People of the Book,” it is reasonable to assume that the Quran is instructing the messenger to consult the custodians of the Torah – the Jews.
If so, this would be one of several quranic expressions that seem to show an unqualified acceptance of the authority of the Torah (also 3.23, 93). This is not to say that these verses prove the authority of the pre-Islamic scriptures – or even that this is the consistent attitude of the Quran. In fact, the Quran is rather confused and confusing about the pre-Islamic scriptures: always positive and respectful when actually naming them, but often suspicious of their treatment by their custodians. See “Tampering with the Pre-Islamic Scriptures”.
