Surah 10

Surah 10:98

"Why was there no town which believed, and its belief benefited it, except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in this present life and gave them enjoyment (of life) for a time."

10.98 – Why was there no town which believed . . . except the people of Jonah?
Jonah gets special mention for the way in which God lifted the punishment from the town to which Jonah preached (the Quran does not give the name of the town). As a rule, the Quran’s “punishment narratives” end with Allah destroying the people. This sūra is named after him ( Yūnus ). Jonah’s name appears elsewhere in lists of prophets and he is also referred to in two different ways as “the one of the fish,” but the fullest version of his story comes at 37.139–49.
