Show Full Scripture Context (11:62-68) — 7 Verses
They said, ‘Ṣāliḥ! You were among us as someone in whom hope was placed before. Do you forbid us to serve what our fathers have served? Surely we are in grave doubt indeed about what you call us to.’
He said, ‘My people! Do you see? If I (stand) on a clear sign from my Lord, and He has given me mercy from Himself, who would help me against God if I disobeyed Him? You would only increase my loss.
My people! This is the she-camel of God, a sign for you. Let her graze on God’s earth, and do not touch her with evil, or a punishment near (at hand) will seize you.’
But they wounded her, and he said, ‘Enjoy (yourselves) in your home(s) for three days – that is a promise not to be denied.’
And when Our command came, We rescued Ṣāliḥ, and those who believed with him, by a mercy from Us, and from the disgrace of that day. Surely your Lord – He is the Strong, the Mighty.
And the cry seized those who did evil, and morning found them leveled in their homes.
(It was) as if they had not lived in prosperity there. ‘Is it not a fact that Thamūd disbelieved their Lord? Is it not, “Away with Thamūd”?’
Allah, the Exalted, mentions what transpired in the discussion between Salih and his people. Allah informs of their ignorance and obstinacy in their statement,
They were saying in this, "We had hope in your strong intellect before you began saying what you have said."
"what those who were before us were upon."
This alludes to the great amount of doubt that they had.
In reference to what He (Allah) has sent me with to you, I am upon conviction and sure evidence.'
'and abandon calling you to the truth and the worship of Allah alone. If I did so, you would not be able to bring me any benefit, nor increase me in loss.' This means loss and ruin.
A discussion of this story has already preceded in Surat Al-A'raf and it is sufficient without having to be repeated here. Allah is the Giver of success.
