Surah 112:3
112.3 – He has not begotten and was not begotten
Muslim commentators have disagreed about the context for the recitation of this verse. Some contended that the audience was pagan or even Jewish. However, it is interesting to note the number of times that this verse is inscribed in the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, built in AD 691. Jerusalem at that time was a city full of Christians.
Some scholars have suggested that this verse is a deliberate denial of the Nicene Creed, which affirms that Jesus is the “only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father” and “begotten, not made.” The Quran’s claim is rather that ‘Īsa is “created not begotten” (3.59; 19.35).
Muslims know Sūra 112 as well as any passage in the Quran, because many recite it daily in their ritual prayers.
