Surah 114

Surah 114:4

"from the evil of the whispering one, the slinking one,"

– from the evil of the whispering one, the slinking one
The idea of ending the Quran with an unnamed “slinking one” who whispers in the hearts of people, and yet another mention of the frivolous jinn, is difficult to account for.
On the jinn, see the comments at 72.1. On human nature and whispers to the soul, see the analysis and response at 79.40.
There is a strong tradition in early Muslim sources that Sūras 113–114 were not included in the Quran recension of Ibn Mas‘ūd, who is believed to be a companion of the messenger. After the Quran’s many ringing attacks on idolatry and powerful affirmations of Allah’s supremacy, these final two sūras do indeed seem to close the book with a whimper of incantation about evil whispering and blowing on knots.
