Surah 12

Surah 12:43

"The king said, ‘Surely I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows, (and) seven lean ones are eating them, and seven green ears (of corn) and others dry. Assembly! Make a pronouncement to me about my vision, if you can interpret visions.’"
Claimed Miracle: History / Egyptology
APOLOGIST CLAIM

"The Quran miraculously uses the title 'King' for the ruler during Joseph's time, and 'Pharaoh' during Moses' time, aligning perfectly with modern Egyptology's timeline of when the term 'Pharaoh' was adopted."

Refutation & Exegesis

While this distinction is an interesting textual feature, it does not necessitate miraculous revelation. The linguistic transition of 'Pharaoh' (from 'great house' to a royal title) was widely documented in regional histories. Furthermore, the Jewish and Christian communities operating in 7th-century Arabia possessed deep, localized traditions regarding the Exodus and the Patriarchs. The Quran, engaging with these existing narratives, reflects the linguistic and historical traditions that were already circulating in the Near East.
Dehistoricization

Proponents dehistoricize the narrative by pretending the localized histories of Egypt were entirely lost to 7th-century Arab traders and nearby Jewish communities. The changing royal titles were part of circulating regional traditions, not an exclusively divine piece of knowledge.
