Surah 19:33
19.33 – Peace (be) upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I am raised up alive
Here the infant ‘Īsā speaks about his own birth, death, and resurrection in a way that seems to match the Gospel affirmations of the same events in the life of Jesus. There is nothing in the context of the verse, or even in the entire sūra, that would contradict this impression. In fact, the Arabic verbs ‘Īsā uses for his birth, death, and resurrection are the very same verbs and tenses that the Quran uses about John the Baptist in verse 15.
Muslim commentators, however, have tended to assert that in this verse ‘Īsā is referring to a death that will happen only after his return as part of the end times scenario in Muslim tradition. His resurrection would then simply be part of the general resurrection on the Day of Resurrection.
This verse is the third of only three verses in the Quran that touch on the death of Jesus (also 3.55; 4.157; cf. 5.75).
