Surah 2:109
"Many of the People of the Book would like (it) if you turned back into disbelievers, after your believing, (because of) jealousy on their part, after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and excuse (them), until God brings His command. Surely God is powerful over everything."
2.109 – So pardon and excuse (them), until God brings His command
This command to pardon and excuse the People of the Book indicates a positive direction for relationships with non-Muslims. Yet there is a qualifier: “until Allah brings His command.” Some Muslim commentaries interpret this to mean that later in the story of Muhammad a harsher treatment of the Jewish tribes in Medina was required, and therefore newer recitations abrogated 2.109. For example, Muqātil ibn Sulaymān (d. 767) wrote that harsher treatment included the killing and captivity of Banū Qurayẓa and the expulsion from Medina of the Banū Naḍīr.
