Surah 2

Surah 2:216

"Fighting is prescribed for you, though it is hateful to you. You may happen to hate a thing though it is good for you, and you may happen to love a thing though it is bad for you. God knows and you do not know."

2.216 – Fighting is prescribed for you, though it is hateful to you

This verse seems to refer to a battle situation in which the messenger is urging the “believers” to fight (al-qitāl) but they do not want to fight.

In other quranic passages, “permission is given” to fight and kill (22.39, 3.152). Here, however, “fighting is prescribed” (also 4.77), and the verse seems to imply that this would be good for the believers.
