2.218 – those who have emigrated and struggled in the way of God

Struggled is a translation of the Arabic verb jāhada, from which the word jihād comes. The context helps determine what sense of struggling the Quran intends in each appearance of the verb. When it closely follows verses about fighting (e.g., 2.216–17), struggling tends to adopt the sense of fighting.
