Does God Speak Directly to Humans?

Opposing Verses

Surah 42:51 → "It is not (fitting) for any human being that God should speak to him, except (by) inspiration, or from behind a veil, or (that) He should send a messenger and he inspire by His permission whatever He pleases. Surely He is most high, wise."
Does the Quran state that God speaks directly to humans or only through intermediaries? Some verses depict God speaking directly to humans like Adam, while another verse states that God only speaks to humans through inspiration, from behind a veil, or via a messenger.
