Surah 2

Surah 2:36

Direct Communication and Visibility of God

Supporting Verses

Surah 2:259 → "Or (have you not considered) the example of the one who passed by a town that had collapsed in ruins? He said, ‘How will God give this (town) life after its death?’ So God caused him to die for a hundred years, (and) then raised him up. He said, ‘How long have you remained (dead)?’ He said, ‘I have remained (dead) for a day or part of a day.’ He said, ‘No! You have remained (dead) for a hundred years. Look at your food and drink, it has not spoiled, and look at your donkey – and (this happened) so that We might make you a sign to the people – and look at the bones, how We raise them up, (and) then clothe them with flesh.’ So when it became clear to him, he said, ‘I know that God is powerful over everything.’"
Surah 4:164 → "and messengers We have already recounted to you before, and messengers We have not recounted to you – but God spoke to Moses directly –"
Surah 53:11 → "His heart did not lie about what it saw."

Opposing Verses

Surah 42:51 → "It is not (fitting) for any human being that God should speak to him, except (by) inspiration, or from behind a veil, or (that) He should send a messenger and he inspire by His permission whatever He pleases. Surely He is most high, wise."
Surah 6:103 → "Sight does not reach Him, but He reaches sight. He is the Gentle, the Aware."
Does the Quran state that God communicates directly with or can be seen by humans? Certain verses state that God only communicates with humans through inspiration, from behind a veil, or via a messenger, and that He cannot be reached by human sight. In contrast, other verses describe God speaking directly to Moses and other individuals, or suggest a divine vision experienced by the heart.
