Surah 2

Surah 2:91

"When it is said to them, ‘Believe in what God has sent down,’ they say, ‘We believe in what has been sent down on us,’ but they disbelieve in anything after that, when it is the truth confirming what is with them. Say: ‘Why did you kill the prophets of God before, if you were believers?’"

2.91 – When it is said to them, “Believe in what Allah has sent down”

Dense discussion continues about a group who will not accept the present recitations to be from God (v. 91) or the authority of the person reciting (v. 101). Though they are not named in this passage (vv. 91–101), the Jews seem to be the target of the discussion, and verses 92 and 93 strongly suggest this. The description of the group is punctuated with references to their past, the speeches of the messenger, and the Quran’s claim that the message is coming from Allah (v. 99).

2.91 – when it is the truth confirming what is with them

The Quran commands the audience to believe that the messenger’s recitations are sent down by Allah on the basis of the claim that his recitations confirm the scriptures they possess. See the analysis of this claim at 46.12.
