"We have not sent down the Qur’ān on you for you to be miserable,"
20.2 – We have not sent down the Qur ’ ān on you for you to be miserable
The seemingly self-conscious, first-person language of this verse, addressed to the messenger and making claims for his recitation, is typical of the voice of the Quran at many points – often at the beginnings or endings of sūras. The same kind of language also appears in this sūra at verses 99 and 113–14. Here the Quran claims that its material is a sending down ( tanzīl ) “from the One who created the earth and the high heavens” (v. 4). See “Different Kinds of Literature”.
