20.85 – Surely We have tempted your people after you (left them), and al-Sāmirī has led them astray
Here the Lord says to Moses that al-Sāmirī is responsible for leading the people astray. Perhaps meaning “the Samaritan,” this reference (also vv. 87, 95) is otherwise incomprehensible. Meanwhile Aaron, whom Moses had left in charge, offers a lame excuse (v. 94).
