In response to Abraham’s polemic, and his destruction of their idols, the people throw Abraham into a fire, but God rescues him (v. 71) by making the fire cool (v. 69). This episode is not part of the biblical account, and Bible readers will no doubt think of the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3. However, a similar story about Abraham appears in Midrāsh Rabbah Genesis, an early Jewish commentary dated to the sixth century.
