Surah 23

Surah 23:1

"The believers have prospered"

– The believers have prospered who are humble in their prayers
The opening passage of this sūra (vv. 1–11) is made up of short verses that have a Psalm-like quality.

The ways in which Allah deals with people and the responses of people to the signs of Allah are explained in several substantial passages in this sūra. Allah sends messengers to deliver his message, and in this sūra the representative messenger is Noah.
Most of the listeners resist the message that the messengers do their best to deliver. Whether in Noah’s day or at the time of the Quran’s first recitation, this sūra anticipates the questions and objections of the listeners and provides the answers that the messenger is commanded to say. In the case of Noah, Allah delivered Noah and his family and drowned the opposition.
Sūra 23 is also notable for an opening psalm-like passage and a judgment scene conversation between Allah and certain inhabitants of Gehenna near the sūra’s end.
