Surah 23

Surah 23:14

"then We made a clot (from) the drop, then We made a lump (from) the clot, then We made bones (from) the lump, then We clothed the bones (with) flesh, (and) then We (re)produced him as another creature. So blessed (be) God, the best of creators!"
Claimed Miracle: Biology / Embryology
APOLOGIST CLAIM

"The Quran accurately anticipates modern embryological stages of development: a drop of semen (nutfah), a clinging clot ('alaqah), a chewed lump of flesh (mudghah), then bones, which are subsequently clothed with flesh."

Refutation & Exegesis

The sequential description in 23:14—where bones form first and are subsequently 'clothed' with flesh—reflects a common understanding from antiquity but does not align with modern embryology. Scientifically, muscles and the cartilage 'models' of future bones actually begin to form simultaneously in the mesoderm layer, with muscles developing strictly before the cartilage fully ossifies into bone. Furthermore, the Quranic sequence deeply parallels the previously circulated 2nd-century AD medical writings of the Greek physician Galen, representing the standard Mediterranean medical knowledge of Late Antiquity that early Muslims inherited, rather than a novel scientific revelation.
Dehistoricization / Reinterpretation

By presenting this biological sequence as unprecedented, apologists dehistoricize the verse, ignoring that this exact (and biologically flawed) sequence of bones preceding flesh was already established in 2nd-century Greek medical texts by Galen, which were highly circulated in the Near East.
