Verse 32

Those who disbelieve say, ‘If only the Qur’ān were sent down on him all of one piece.’ (It has been sent down) in this way, so that We may make firm your heart by means of it. We have arranged it very carefully.

Verse 33

وَلَا يَأۡتُونَكَ بِمَثَلٍ إِلَّا جِئۡنَٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَحۡسَنَ تَفۡسِيرًا

They do not bring you any parable, except (that) We have (already) brought you the truth, and (something) better in exposition.

Verse 34

Those who are going to be gathered to Gehenna on their faces – those will be worse in position and farther astray (from the) way.

Allah tells us about the many objections raised by the disbelievers, their stubbornness, and how they spoke of things which were none of their concern. They said:

Quoted Scripture
""Why is not the Qur'an revealed to him all at once?""

meaning, why was this Qur’an, which was revealed to him, not sent down all at one time, as the previous Books, the Tawrah, Injil, Zabur and other Divine Books? Allah answered them, telling them that it was revealed in stages over twenty-three years, according to events and circumstances, and whatever rulings were needed, in order to strengthen the hearts of the believers, as He says:

{And (it is) a Qur’an which We have divided (into parts)...} (17:106).

Allah says:

Quoted Scripture
"that We may strengthen your heart thereby. And We have revealed it to you gradually, in stages."

Qatadah said it means: “We have explained it.” ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam said it means: “We have given its interpretation.”

About this Source & Scholarly Authority (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Universal Sunni Consensus: Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Azim by Hafiz Ibn Kathir (701–774 AH / 1301–1373 AD) is universally regarded across all major schools of Sunni Islam (traditional, Salafi, Ash'ari) as the most authoritative classical exegesis. It is prized because it relies on Tafsir bil-Ma'thur—interpreting the Quran using the Quran itself, authentic Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad, and recorded statements of the early Companions (Sahabah).

Standard English Edition: This text is from the standard 10-volume English abridgment published by Dar-us-Salam Publications (supervised by Shaykh Safiur-Rahman Al-Mubarakpuri), which is the official, most widely distributed English Quranic commentary in mosques and Islamic libraries worldwide today.
