26.193–94 – The trustworthy spirit has brought it down on your heart
The Quran claims that the recitation comes to the messenger by way of “the trustworthy [or faithful] spirit.” Elsewhere Gabriel (2.97) or the holy spirit (16.102) brings the recitation down. This may be one reason why many Muslim commentators equate the spirit with Gabriel. On “spirit” ( rūḥ ) in the Quran, see the analysis at 97.4.
