Surah 28:44
You were not on the western side when We decreed the command to Moses
The Quran says to the messenger that he was not present in Egypt during the time of Moses to witness the events of verses 3–42. The implication seems to be that this story must have been revealed by Allah to the messenger. This matches the claim in verse 3 that it is Allah who “recites” this story to the messenger (also 12.3).
This is the most extensive of such passages in the Quran, with “You were not . . .” in verses 45 and 46 as well. Similar statements appear at 3.44 (story of Mary); 11.49 (Noah); and 12.102 (Joseph). Several of the statements add that Allah “reveals” or “inspires” the story in the messenger, and 11.49 specifies that neither the messenger nor his people knew the story prior to its recitation by the messenger.
In response: How effective is this claim for a divine source? The Quran’s versions of biblical stories provide enough familiar parts to show that these are the same basic stories. But does this prove that the quranic versions are inspired? Moses stories circulated widely in the Middle East during the seventh century. And what about the evidence of details in the Quran’s versions that are not in the Bible but are also found in Jewish rabbinic or Christian apocryphal writings from before the seventh century?
