Surah 28

Surah 28:49

"Say: ‘Bring a Book from God that is a better guide than these two – I shall follow it, if you are truthful.’"

Bring a Book from God that is a better guide than these two
The audience does not believe that the messenger’s recitation is true. The Quran commands the messenger to challenge the audience to compose a book, or “writing” (kitāb), like the recitation. Similar challenges appear at 2.23; 10.38; 11.13; 17.88; and 52.34. In Muslim tradition these verses became known as the taḥaddī (challenge) verses. See the analysis of these challenge verses at 52.34.
Interestingly, in this version of the challenge, the Quran holds together the book given to Moses (Torah) with the messenger’s recitations. There does not seem to be any hint of an accusation of corruption against the Torah or even suspicion about the Jewish handling of the Torah in these verses (41–51). See also the tone of the following verses (52–55).
