Surah 3

Surah 3:110

"You are the best community (ever) brought forth for humankind, commanding right and forbidding wrong, and believing in God. If the People of the Book had believed, it would indeed have been better for them. Some of them are believers, but most of them are wicked."

<p class="footnote" id="pz98-9">The Arabic term translated “community” is <em>umma</em>. This is the key term for the Islamic worldwide nation. To command right behavior and forbid indecency is certainly a great accomplishment for any community.</p>

<p class="footnote" id="pz98-11">The unbelief of the People of the Book is mentioned here in the past tense, which suggests that the “belief” wished for in this verse is the belief that the messenger is a true prophet and that his recitations are from Allah.</p>
