This verse begins a long passage that brings to mind a military conflict (vv. 121–80). Though in much of the passage it seems difficult to get one’s bearings, some orientation is offered by the language of “battle” (v. 121), “wound” (vv. 140, 172), “enemy” (v. 140), “struggle” (v. 142), killing and being killed (qatala/qutila, vv. 144, 152, 154, 156–58, 168–69), and fighting (v. 146, 156, 167).

The earliest Muslim stories of Islamic origins linked this passage of sixty verses with the “battle of Uḥud” (Sīra, 392–401 [3.121–79]; Raids 154–60 [3.121–200]). This passage also mentions “Badr” (v. 123), an earlier battle according to Muslim tradition.
