Surah 3

Surah 3:147

"All that they said was, ‘Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our wantonness in our affair, and make firm our feet, and give us victory over the people who are disbelievers.’"

3.147 – Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our wantonness in our affair
This verse characterizes prophets as asking forgiveness for their sins (dhunūb, sing. dhanb). Indeed, many quranic prophets ask for forgiveness: Adam (7.23), Noah (11.47), Abraham (26.82), Moses (28.16), and David (38.24).
The messenger addressed by the Quran is also commanded to ask forgiveness for his sin (40.55, 47.19, cf. 48.2). See an analysis of this theme at 48.2.
