– confirming what was before it, and He sent down the Torah and the Gospel before (this) as guidance for the people

Here the Quran names two pre-Islamic scriptures that it recognizes as “sent down” – the tawrāt and the injīl. One can see the similarities between these Arabic words and their English counterparts, Torah and Evangel (or Gospel). Here, as in all other occurrences of these terms in the Quran, the Quran describes these two scriptures in a positive and respectful way (“guidance,” v. 4). The Quran frequently claims that its contents confirm (muṣaddiq) what is “with” the audience or “what was before it” (mā bayna yadayhi, lit. “what is between his two hands”). See the analysis of the Quran’s claim of confirmation at 46.12.
