Surah 3:78
"Surely (there is) indeed a group of them who twist their tongues with the Book, so that you will think it is from the Book, when it is not from the Book. And they say, ‘It is from God,’ when it is not from God. They speak lies against God, and they know (it)."
3.78 – a group of them who twist their tongues with the Book
Verse 78 is another important verse in the series of quranic verses that seem to show suspicion about the treatment of the pre-Islamic scriptures. Here the action in view is “twisting their tongues with the book” – perhaps mispronouncing or changing the words. The preceding context addresses “People of the Book,” so they may be assumed to be the subject here; however, if a scripture is meant, it is not named.
