<p class="footnote" id="pz97-8">To what does the Arabic word <em>bakka</em> (Becca) refer? A number of Muslim translations of this verse make it another name for Mecca. But the word <em>makka</em> only appears once in the Quran, at 48.24. In Arabic script, the letter <em>bā</em>’ is quite a different shape from the <em>mīm</em>.</p>
