Surah 33:1
Sūra 33 is unique in the Quran for its extensive and concentrated material on “the prophet” and for the personal nature of that material. It is strikingly different in both tone and content from almost all of the sūras between Sūras 9 and 47. References to “the messenger” and “the prophet” pepper the text. “The prophet” is repeatedly addressed in the second person and described in the third person. Two statements well known among Muslims are that “the prophet is closer to the believers than they are to themselves” (v. 6) and that “certainly the messenger of God has been a good example for you” (v. 21). “The messenger” is repeatedly associated with Allah for submission and obedience (vv. 31, 33, 66, 71, cf. 36). Tradition has linked many verses from this sūra with famous events in the Muslim story of Islamic origins. The name “Muḥammad” appears in verse 40, where he is portrayed as both “the messenger of Allah” and “the seal of the prophets.”
