Surah 36:49
Show Full Scripture Context (36:48-50) — 3 Verses
وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَٰذَا ٱلۡوَعۡدُ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ
They say, ‘When (will) this promise (come to pass), if you are truthful?’
مَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا صَيۡحَةٗ وَٰحِدَةٗ تَأۡخُذُهُمۡ وَهُمۡ يَخِصِّمُونَ
They are only waiting for a single cry – it will seize them while they are (still) disputing,
فَلَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ تَوۡصِيَةٗ وَلَآ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ
and then they will not be able to make a bequest, nor will they return to their (own) families.
Allah tells us how the disbelievers thought that the Day of Resurrection would never come to pass, as they said:
“"Wheti will this promise be fulfilled .. ."”
“Those who believe not therein seek to hasteti it” (42:18).
Allah says:
“They await only but a single Sayhah which will seize them while they are disputing!”
meaning, they are only waiting for a single Sayhah, and this - and Allah knows best - is the Trumpet blast of terror. The trumpet will be blown while people are going about their daily business in marketplaces and elsewhere, arguing and disputing in the usual manner. While this is going on, Allah will command Israfil to blow into the Trumpet, so he will blow a long, continuous note. There will be no one on the face of the earth who does not tilt their head to listen to the sound coming from the heavens. The people will be driven by a fire which will surround them on all sides, and they will be gathered at the place of gathering.
Allah says:
“Then they will not be able to make bequest,”
meaning, with regard to their property and whatever they own, because the matter is too momentous for that,
“nor they will return to their family.”
Many Hadiths and reports were recorded concerning this, which we will mention in the Tafsir of the Surah which mentions the Trumpet, if Allah wills. This will be the first Trumpet blast, the blast of terror, which will be followed by the blast of the swoon, when everyone in the heavens and on earth will die, except whom Allah wills. Then after that will come the blast of the resurrection, and standing before the Lord of the worlds. That is what is referred to here:
