Show Full Scripture Context (37:114-122) — 9 Verses
Verse 114

Certainly We bestowed favor on Moses and Aaron,

Verse 115

and We rescued them and their people from the great distress.

Verse 116

We helped them, and they were the victors.

Verse 117

We gave them both the clarifying Book,

Verse 118

and guided them to the straight path,

Verse 119

and left (this blessing) on both of them among the later (generations):

Verse 120

‘Peace (be) upon Moses and Aaron!’

Verse 121

In this way We repay the doers of good.

Verse 122

Surely they were two of Our believing servants.

Allah tells us how He blessed Musa and Harun with prophethood and how He saved them, along with those who believed, from the oppression of Fir'awn and his people, who had persecuted them by killing their sons and sparing their women, and by forcing them to do the most menial tasks, then ultimately He caused them to prevail over them and to seize their lands and their wealth and all that they had spent their entire lives amassing. Then Allah revealed to Musa the Clear and Mighty Book, which is the Tawrah, as Allah says: And indeed We granted to Musa and Harun the criterion (of right and wrong), and a shining light. And Allah says here: "And We gave them the clear Scripture; and guided them to the right path." meaning, with regard to words and deeds. "And We left for them among the later generations." means, that after they died they would be mentioned in good terms and spoken of highly. Then Allah explain this further: "Salam (peace!) be upon Musa and Harun! Verily, thus do We reward the doers of good. Verily, they were two of Our believing servants."

About this Source & Scholarly Authority (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Universal Sunni Consensus: Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Azim by Hafiz Ibn Kathir (701–774 AH / 1301–1373 AD) is universally regarded across all major schools of Sunni Islam (traditional, Salafi, Ash'ari) as the most authoritative classical exegesis. It is prized because it relies on Tafsir bil-Ma'thur—interpreting the Quran using the Quran itself, authentic Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad, and recorded statements of the early Companions (Sahabah).
