37.139 – Surely Jonah was indeed one of the envoys
This story of Jonah (vv. 139–48) is the most complete of the Quran’s four references. Elsewhere we only learn that “the people of Jonah” believed and were spared (10.98), that “he of the fish” fled in anger and ended up crying out in the darkness (21.87), and similarly that “he of the fish” cried out in despair (68.48).
This version touches the main points of the biblical account (Jonah 1–4) but switches the sequence of Jonah’s preaching to Nineveh (the Quran does not mention the city) and his anger under the “gourd tree” (v. 146).
