Surah 4

Surah 4:59

"You who believe! Obey God, and obey the messenger and those (who have) the command among you. If you argue about anything, refer it to God and the messenger, if you believe in God and the Last Day. That is better and fairer in interpretation."
Is Allah the sole judge and commander?

Supporting Verses

Surah 24:56 → "Observe the prayer and give the alms, and obey the messenger, so that you may receive compassion."
Surah 33:36 → "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when God and His messenger have decided a matter, to have the choice in their matter. Whoever disobeys God and His messenger has very clearly gone astray."
Surah 4:65 → "But no! By your Lord! They will not believe until they make you judge concerning their disputes. Then they would have no difficulty with what you decided, and would submit (in full) submission."
Surah 4:80 → "Whoever obeys the messenger has obeyed God, but whoever turns away – We have not sent you as a watcher over them."

Opposing Verses

Surah 17:111 → "Say: ‘Praise (be) to God, who has not taken a son, nor has He any associate in the kingdom, nor has He any (need of) an ally (to protect Him) from disgrace.’ Magnify Him (with all) magnificence."
Surah 18:26 → "Say: ‘God knows about how long they remained (there). To Him (belongs) the unseen of the heavens and the earth. How well He sees and hears! They have no ally other than Him, and He does not associate anyone in His judgment.’"
Surah 6:114 → "Shall I seek (anyone) other than God as a judge? He (it is) who has sent down to you the Book, set forth distinctly. Those to whom We have (already) given the Book know that it is sent down from your Lord with the truth. Do not be one of the doubters."
Does the Quran state that Allah is the exclusive judge and commander, or do others share in His authority? Some verses assert that Allah has no associate in His judgment or kingdom, acting as the sole judge. Conversely, other verses indicate that the messenger makes binding decisions and command obedience to him alongside Allah.
