Surah 4:89
4.89 â seize them and kill them wherever you find them
The Quran uses the Arabic verb qatala five times to command killing. Two of those occurrences are in this sÅ«ra (vv. 89, 91). The reason for the commands seems to be that the âhypocritesâ (v. 88) want the âbelieversâ to reject faith. The Quran therefore calls the âbelieversâ to kill the âhypocrites.â
âWherever you find themâ seems to suggest a wide-open attack (also in 9.5), but there are limits to the killing. Here the Quran says that if the âhypocritesâ withdraw from the fighting and instead offer peace, the âbelieversâ should stop fighting them (v. 90). The expression âtheir hearts restrained from fightingâ (v. 90) suggests that not all those who heard the command to fight (vv. 74â77, 84) were convinced that this was the way of God.
