Surah 40

Surah 40:77

"So be patient! Surely the promise of God is true. Whether We show you some of that which We promise them, or take you, to Us they will be returned."

– Whether We show you some of that which We promise them, or take you
In this verse addressed to the messenger, Droge translates the Arabic verb tawaffā as “take,” adding “in death” in a footnote. A series of Muslim translations render the verb as “cause to die” or similar expressions related to death (Pickthall, Shakir, Mohsin Khan, Sahih International, Muhammad Sarwar). The same verb appears at 10.46 and 13.40 and is similarly translated by these Muslim scholars. Yet none of these five translates tawaffā in the same way at 3.55, where ‘Īsā is the object of the verb. See the comments on this question at 3.55 and “The Death of Jesus in the Quran”.
