Surah 48

Surah 48:11

"Those of the Arabs who stayed behind will say to you, ‘Our wealth and our families kept us busy, so ask forgiveness for us.’ They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say: ‘Who has any power for you against God, whether He intends harm for you or intends benefit for you? No! God is aware of what you do."

48.11 – Those of the Arabs who stayed behind will say to you

These words introduce an extended passage about the reluctance of the Bedouin to advance with the messenger and the believers, apparently to a military engagement (vv. 11–17). The passage mentions spoils of battle (maghānim, v. 15; also vv. 19–20) and fighting (qātala, v. 16; also v. 33).
