Surah 49

Surah 49:1

"You who believe! Do not be forward before God and His messenger, but guard (yourselves) against God. Surely God is hearing, knowing."

Sūra 49 seems appropriately grouped with Sūras 47 and 48. The messenger is again associated with Allah by belief, obedience, and decorum. High claims are made for “the prophet” and “the messenger of Allah.” The Bedouins reappear.

Yet there are differences. The first verses of this sūra are occupied with a seemingly private matter for the messenger. There is fighting, but this time it is among the believers themselves.

49.1 – You who believe! Do not be forward before God and His messenger

This sūra immediately addresses the “believers” with instructions for their behavior (also vv. 6, 11, 13). It also associates the messenger with Allah as deserving of decorum (v. 1), obedience (v. 14), and belief (v. 15).

The first passage in this sūra (vv. 1–5) is another example of a text type that concerns the personal situation of the messenger (also in Sūras 24; 33; 65; 66; see “Different Kinds of Literature”). Here the Quran instructs believers in how to address the messenger and behave in his presence.

The Quran here describes the messenger as “the prophet” (v. 2). This expression occurs quite rarely in the Quran. See the analysis of “the prophet” at 66.9.
