Surah 5

Surah 5:116

"(Remember) when God said, ‘Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say to the people, “Take me and my mother as two gods instead of God (alone)”?’ He said, ‘Glory to You! It is not for me to say what I have no right (to say). If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within me, but I do not know what is within You. Surely You – You are the Knower of the unseen."

5.116 – when God said, “Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say to the people . . . ?”
These three verses (116–18) imagine a conversation in which Allah asks ‘Īsā whether ‘Īsā told the people to take him and his mother as two gods besides or “instead of” Allah. ‘Īsā denies saying this and declares that instead he only instructed the people to serve Allah “my Lord and your Lord” (v. 117).
‘Īsā’s statement and command here match several other verses in which ‘Īsā himself is “quoted” as denying his own deity (3.51; 5.72; 19.36; 43.64; cf. 4.172). See an analysis of these statements at 43.64.
The second question that these verses raise is the concept of the Trinity in the mind of the reciter/writer. Verse 116 seems to suggest a Trinity of Allah, ‘Īsā, and Mary – a possible confusion concerning the Trinity. In any case, other references to the Trinity appear at 4.171 and 5.73.
