5.15 – People of the Book! Our messenger has come to you
In this verse the Quran claims that a new messenger has come to the People of the Book (also v. 19) along with a “clear Book” from Allah. Notice that the claims for the messenger and book in verses 15 and 19 bracket a key denial of the deity of the Messiah (v. 17).
The Quran directly addresses the People of the Book in this verse and four other verses in this sūra (vv. 19, 59, 68, 77), presenting a number of important truth claims. The tone of these appeals is polemical: they censure the beliefs of Jews and Christians in favor of the messenger of Allah.
