Surah 5:35
"You who believe! Guard (yourselves) against God, and seek access to Him, and struggle in His way, so that you may prosper."
5.35 – You who believe! . . . struggle in His way
The Quran contains seven commands to “struggle” using the Arabic verb jāhada, from which the word jihad comes. Verse 35 is the first occurrence of this imperative in the canonical sequence. The sense of struggle that the Quran intends in each command may be partly determined from the context. If the context is a battle scene, or if struggle appears close to commands to fight or kill (qatala, e.g., 5.33), struggle picks up the sense of fighting.
